So, it’s the last day of what’s so far been a very productive week here and I drove to work this morning with a feeling of great hope and optimism.  Of course, once I get here hoping to relax and make myself a delicious cafe latte, fate conspires against me and the first of many of the daily trials begin!

One of the things I love so much about the garage, is that it’s never boring.  Sometimes, during rare moments of peace, I wish that I was in a ‘normal’ job where I always knew what was going to be waiting on my desk when I arrive, would have normal tea breaks, and always leave on time. This is nothing like that though, and every day offers a different set of challenges. Be it a customer that arrives for their booking on the wrong day, a parts supplier that ‘forgot’ to process our order and therefore left us with no delivery, or the sickness or absence of a staff member, there’s always something to make you have to react quickly to save the day.

Today is already proving to be ‘one of those days’ as so far (and it’s now only 09:30) we’ve had:

  • Ford Focus recovered on breakdown lorry with overheating (again)
  • Volkswagen Caddy van on way to workshop with RAC as driver has ‘lost’ his oil filler cap.
  • 2 customers waiting in reception for a technician to have a ‘quick look’ at car problems.
  • 1 lot of wrong parts delivered.
  • 1 customer arrived without a booking
  • 1 technician almost severing his finger trying to change a shock absorber

I could go on, but at this rate I’ll never finish anything today!

Fortunately, we’ve got a great team here and all the staff seem to possess a ‘can do’ attitude when it comes to rapidly adapting to new and challenging situations. I feel that we differ from so many other garages (particularly main dealers) in that we’ll always try and sort a problem ‘there and then’ rather than say, “Oh yes, we’ll take a look next Thursday at the earliest” as is all to common nowadays. When cars break down, it happens instantly and it’s vital that they’re back on the road as soon as possible. We’ll always try our best to accommodate an ‘emergency’ and that’s what makes us so popular with the RAC and AA services.

Anyway, I’d better go and do some work now – is that another RAC van I can see on the forecourt CCTV?
