During a lovely trip to Tilbury docks in Essex today (that’s another story), I saw what I considered to be, an amazing sight. In a huge car park, were thousands and thousands of brand-new Hyundai cars, 4 x 4’s and MPV’s. All parked in neat rows and with the protective white plastic stuck to the doors and bonnets to protect the paintwork. As I drove towards the water’s edge to the cargo shed I was collecting from, I came to an enormous Asian cargo ship in berth.  Being driven from within was a steady stream of even more Hyundai’s by a team of drivers, all going to join their brothers and sisters in the enormous car park! A little research showed that these giant Ro Ro (roll on, roll off) car transporter ships can carry 3000 cars at a time. The Hyundai facility at Tilbury handles 33000 cars a year! That’s a whole lot of Hyundai’s for sure.

Now, when ordering a new car from some manufacturers, there always seems to be a 3 month or more waiting list. I reckon that if you want a car in a hurry, try a Hyundai dealer. They must have hundreds available, in every colour, shape and size. Fortunately, they’re actually really great cars nowadays, and have shaken-off the old image of the dull mid 1980’s and early 90’s cars like the Pony (as in Pony & Trap) and the Stellar (a Korean copy of a Ford Cortina). The new cars like the i10, i30, Getz, Coupe and Santa-Fe offer fantastic value for money and a superb 5 year warranty. I’ve tried several models in the range over the last few years, and can thoroughly recommend them. When I travel to Paraguay every year, it’s usually a Hyundai of some description that we hire as they’re robust, comfortable and well suited to the extreme conditions.

The huge South Korean company doesn’t just make cars, but includes trains, lorries, cranes, aircraft and even huge ferries and cargo ships! Originally founded in 1947 as a construction company, they are now the largest conglomerate in South Korea and are the world’s 5th largest maker of cars!

So, if you’re looking for some motoring on a budget, don’t exclude the Hyundai range due to lack of knowledge – they’re well worth a closer look!
